Dublin 'could have a six-line metro system in place by 2025 entirely funded by private investment' and the Metro Dublin plan would cost €9bn.

John van der Poll, the CEO of Metro Dublin thinks the capital could bring in the system relatively cheap and save Dubliners massively in travel time.

The lines would run from Ashbourne, Swords, Howth Junction, Rathfarnham, Blanchardstown and Adamstown.

All six lines would interlink in the city centre creating a central loop running under Dublin city.

The Metro Dublin plan would cost €9bn, which he says is a third of what would normally be considered for a project of this size. Speaking on Newstalk Breakfast, Mr van der Poll said:

“It’s going to cost €9bn and it's going to be paid by private financing.

“What gives me the confidence to give a figure that is approximately a third of what would normally be considered for a scheme of this type is a guy called Professor Manuel Melis Maynar.

“He is the architect of Metro Madrid and he did this in Madrid: he built 120 kilometres of metro in just seven years and at a fraction of the price that, say, London Underground paid for the Jubilee Line”.

Minister Shane Ross is currently examining the plans and Dublin Metro are in talks with An Bord Pleanala about the system.
