Sales by Fuel Type

During the month of July over half (13,764) of all cars sold where diesel cars with the number of petrol cars coming in at (11,123). This would suggest that despite the increasing bad press with diesel, they are still by far the most popular ICE cars being sold in Ireland.

As can be seen by the sales figures, the vast majority of vehicles were either diesel or petrol. In addition to this, 1746 new petrol/electric or Hybrid vehicles were sold with 435 used hybrid vehicles imported. There was also a small proportion of electric cars sold, 385 new EV’s were registered with 46 used electric vehicles being imported into the country.

Irish Motor Market Analysis by Make

Month: July 2018

Readers may be interested in knowing the breakdown of sales during the month of July by manufacturer. As can be noticed from the list below, there is very little in the difference of sales between the top three makes and we can notice also the usual suspects in the top five positions for new car sales, with VW again gaining the top spot, closely followed by Toyota and Hyundai, then Ford and Nissan.

An interesting development though is the addition of another 22 Tesla cars on Irish roads during the month of July. Going forward, we will see more and more of these EV semi-autonomous cars hitting the roads here in Ireland. Certainly, when considering that only 6 supercars (Porsche in this case) were sold during July.

On the bottom of the sales list is a lone Smart car, which is most likely to be seen in one of our towns or cities and at the bottom of the list, one DS car. DS is the premium car marque of Groupe PSA. The DS first came out in 2009 as a premium sub-brand by Citroën. DS  is an abbreviation of ‘Different Spirit’ or some would say, ‘Distinctive Series’ (although the reference to the historical Citroën DS is evident). This brand was created to run in parallel to Citroëns’ mainstream cars. The name is also a play on the French word déesse, meaning goddess.
